Key learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to train professionals who are able to combine specific architectural and town planning skills with the mastery of the tools related to the building feasibility of the designed work, so as to enable them to supervise development and implementation of such projects under the aesthetic, functional, technical and financial profile. Therefore, the qualitative integration of historical-critical and technical-scientific skills is pursued, according to a teaching approach which considers design as a synthesis process. This will enable professionals to operate in the areas of architectural design and town planning, also at an European level, thanks to their sound and articulated knowledge in the technological and structural issues of building and construction.
Occupational profiles of graduates
The main career opportunities of the Five-Year Degree Course in Building Engineering and Architecture are the following: architectural design; town planning; restoration of the architectural heritage and its conservation, enhancement and requalification; the renovation and requalification of buildings and related building elements; the organisation of traditional and industrial building construction processes and implementation of works, considering the control of the quality of the work implemented and its sustainability in a specific context. In particular, the Graduate of this degree course in Building Engineering and Architecture will deal with the following activities: design of buildings and complex works/structures, management of their implementation in all operational, technical and procedural stages; control, analysis and assessment of the existing building heritage, as well as the organisation of its renovation in all details; participation in work-teams and coordination of the same in the implementation of complex urban works by taking into account technical, financial feasibility and environmental aspects; management of building yards for the development of buildings and infrastructure; management of safety plans in building yards and workplaces. These professionals can work both as self-employed and as employees in companies and in the civil service. Graduates of this degree course in Building Engineering and Architecture can also work in public and private research centers or entities.
The Five-Year Degree Course has been taken with the adoption of Directive 85/385/EEC, concerning the mutual recognition of diplomas, certificates and other qualifications in architecture by the Member States. For this purpose, innovative teaching models have been developed to combine the disciplinary areas of architecture and engineering with the aim to train professionals who are able to combine specific architectural and town planning skills with the mastery of the tools related to the building feasibility of the designed work, so as to enable them to supervise development and implementation of such projects under the aesthetic, functional, technical and financial profile. Graduates can enrol in the Professional Register of Engineers and Architects.
Admission requirements
The enrolment in the Five-Year Degree Course in Building Engineering and Architecture is based on the current regulations on enrolment in restricted access degree courses. Students have to pass admission tests, which are compulsory at a national level. Students are required to possess ability and knowledge in the following fields: general knowledge and logical reasoning; history; drawing and representation; mathematics and physics. Entry test contents, dates and methods, as well as the number of available places and the criteria of points awarding to create a list of eligible students, are prescribed by the MIUR and provided in the Call for admission.
